Corporate giants have a wonderful history of doing nothing in fields outside their expertise. IBM has lots of know-how in process technology and informatics, and zero core expertise in biochemistry. To add insult to injury, IBM has a rich history of not making a dime on some of their most notable inventions. SPM anyone?

Thanks Keith. Any additional details you can share about what sort of grants they've received / applied for? Does it appear to you that they're pursuing sequencing, informatics, both, something else entirely...?

The other 800 pound corporate gorilla which has some effort in this field is GE. I don't know any details about what route they are trying, but I've seen they've gotten grants.
